William Dewitt Brown III was a 44-year-old sergeant from Franklin, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army with Company C, 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Polk, Louisiana. His unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On September 19, 2013, Brown died in Gamberi, a district in Afghanistan's Laghman province. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on patrol. The incident was reported as occurring during a dismounted patrol in an area known for insurgent activity.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
