Their Story

Seteria Lafaye Brown was a 22-year-old soldier from Orlando, Florida. She served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas. According to military records, her service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On July 25, 2008, Brown was killed at Forward Operating Base Sharana in Afghanistan's Paktika province. The Department of Defense stated she died from wounds sustained when her vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. She was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan government, and insurgent groups including the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The mission officially concluded in December 2014, transitioning to a follow-on operation.

Brown's death was reported by several news outlets, including the Orlando Sentinel and the Department of Defense. She was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to military announcements.
