He was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 137 (VFA-137), the 'Kestrels,' a unit that operates F/A-18E Super Hornets. The squadron was part of Carrier Air Wing 8, deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Navy announced Brown's death in a press release several days after the incident. He was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. His remains were returned to the United States.
