Their Story

Matthew Warren Brown, known as Matt, was a Private (PV2) serving with Battery C, 3rd Battalion, 321st Field Artillery Regiment, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was a 2006 graduate of Seneca Valley High School in Pennsylvania. According to the Department of Defense, he was 20 years old at the time of his death.

On May 11, 2008, Brown was killed in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died from wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) during combat operations. He was the only soldier killed in the incident.

Brown's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2008, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in insurgent activity, particularly the use of IEDs, in eastern provinces like Kunar along the border with Pakistan.

His body was returned to Pennsylvania, where a funeral service was held at Grace Church in Cranberry Township. He was buried with military honors at the Zelienople Community Mausoleum. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations.

Brown is memorialized on a plaque at his high school and on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Butler County, Pennsylvania. His unit, the 321st Field Artillery, continued its deployment in support of counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan following his death.
