U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Daniel Joseph Brown, 27, of Jerome, Idaho, was killed in a hostile incident in Arghandab, Afghanistan, on March 24, 2012.

Their Story

Daniel Joseph Brown was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. A native of Jerome, Idaho, he was 27 years old at the time of his death and had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On March 24, 2012, Brown was killed in Arghandab District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device (IED). The attack occurred during a dismounted patrol.

Brown's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Arghandab District, a fertile river valley near Kandahar City, was a known insurgent stronghold and a frequent site of intense combat and IED attacks against coalition and Afghan forces.

Brown's death was reported by the Department of Defense and recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.

Staff Sergeant Brown is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Carson and on online veterans' memorials. His name is included on the roster of service members from Idaho who died in the post-9/11 wars.
