Broehm, Matthew James

Matthew James Broehm was a 22-year-old from Flagstaff, Arizona. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based out of Camp Pendleton, California. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 2 under the I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

On November 4, 2010, Broehm was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death, stating he died of wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. No further specifics of the engagement were released in the initial casualty report.

Broehm's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, his unit was part of a major troop surge focused on clearing Taliban strongholds in Helmand, particularly around Sangin district, which saw intense fighting. The 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines sustained significant casualties during this period.

Following his death, Broehm's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Flagstaff. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.
