Petty Officer First Class Michael John Brodsky was a 33-year-old sailor from Tamarac, Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy with the Cryptologic Warfare Activity Sixty-Six, Security Detachment (CNRSW SEC DET). His unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan.
Brodsky died on July 21, 2012, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of a hostile incident in Afghanistan. He had been medically evacuated from the combat theater to the military hospital in Germany for treatment of his wounds.
Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved U.S. and coalition forces conducting counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, primarily in Afghanistan. Brodsky's death occurred during a period of intense fighting as international forces worked to transition security responsibilities to Afghan national forces.
His death was officially announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from the rank of Petty Officer Second Class to Petty Officer First Class. Brodsky was survived by his family, including his wife and children.
PO1 Brodsky is memorialized on the Navy Memorial Foundation's 'Faces of the Fallen' page and on other veterans' memorial websites. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Museum of the Forgotten Warriors in California.
