Brodeur, David Lawrence
U.S. Air Force Major David Lawrence Brodeur, 34, of Auburn, Massachusetts, was killed in a hostile incident in Kabul, Afghanistan, on April 27, 2011.
Their Story
David Lawrence Brodeur was a major in the United States Air Force, assigned to the 11th Air Force based at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. A native of Auburn, Massachusetts, he was 34 years old at the time of his death and had deployed to multiple locations, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On the morning of April 27, 2011, Major Brodeur was one of nine people killed in a shooting at Kabul International Airport. An Afghan pilot, identified as Ahmad Gul, opened fire on a group of coalition personnel inside a secure, high-level meeting room. The attack also killed a U.S. contractor and several Afghan military personnel.
Brodeur died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The incident occurred during a period of heightened U.S. troop presence, known as the surge, which aimed to stabilize the country before a planned drawdown of forces.
In the aftermath, the U.S. Air Force posthumously promoted Brodeur to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was survived by his wife and two children. His body was returned to Massachusetts, where he was buried with full military honors.
His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. The Lt. Col. David L. Brodeur Jr. ROTC Award was established in his memory at his alma mater, Norwich University, to recognize cadets for leadership and character.
