Bryan Allen Brewster was a 24-year-old sergeant from Fontana, California, serving with Company B, 3rd Battalion, General Support Aviation Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, part of Task Force Centaur based at Fort Drum, New York. His unit had deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On May 5, 2006, Sergeant Brewster was killed during combat operations in Kunar Province, a mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his unit came under enemy small-arms fire.
By 2006, Operation Enduring Freedom was in its fifth year. The Taliban had regrouped, and violence was escalating, particularly in Afghanistan's eastern provinces. U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations against a resilient enemy, with improvised explosive device attacks and direct fire engagements becoming more frequent.
Sergeant Brewster's death was reported by the Department of Defense on May 8, 2006. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to military records.
He is remembered on memorials at Fort Drum and in his home state of California. His name is inscribed on Panel 6A, Line 132 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
