Michael Cean Braden was a 31-year-old U.S. Army captain from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. He served with the 1st Infantry Division Signal Company, part of the Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Captain Braden died on April 18, 2012, in Bagram, Afghanistan. The official release stated his death resulted from wounds sustained from small arms fire while on patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation involved coalition forces and the Afghan National Security Forces in counter-insurgency and training missions.
The Army posthumously promoted Braden from the rank of first lieutenant to captain. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.
