Their Story

Brian Robert Bowman was a 24-year-old specialist in the United States Army. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. He was from Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Bowman died on January 3, 2010, in Ashoque, Afghanistan, in the Arghandab District of Kandahar province. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. A military statement at the time reported that he was killed when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Bowman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009 and early 2010, U.S. forces were engaged in a significant troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on Taliban strongholds in southern provinces like Kandahar.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense on January 5, 2010. The Indianapolis Star reported that Bowman was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.

Brian Bowman is memorialized on the Indiana Fallen Heroes website and at Fort Carson. His name is inscribed on the Crawfordsville Veterans Memorial.
