Bowers died on March 18, 2011, at Camp Lemonnier, a U.S. expeditionary base in Djibouti. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed in action. The specific details of the incident that led to his death were not publicly disclosed by military officials.

His death occurred under the umbrella of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
