Joseph Anthony Bovia was a 24-year-old sergeant from Kenner, Louisiana, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based in Okinawa, Japan, as part of the 3rd Marine Division.
