U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua Alan Born, 25, of Niceville, Florida, died on February 23, 2012, from hostile action at Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Joshua Alan Born was a 25-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Niceville, Florida. He served with the 549th Military Police Company, 716th Military Police Battalion, under Combined Joint Task Force-1 (Task Force Peacekeeper). According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Sergeant Born died on February 23, 2012, at Forward Operating Base Fenty, part of the Jalalabad Airfield complex in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. The Pentagon reported his death was the result of hostile fire. A subsequent investigation, cited in military records, concluded he was killed by small arms fire from an Afghan soldier in what was described as an insider attack.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2012, the U.S. had surged troops to the country and was beginning a drawdown, a period marked by increased insider attacks against coalition forces.
Born was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. The Army awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors in his home state of Florida.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of South Florida and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 2W, Line 128 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
