Borjas, Federico Guerra

Federico Guerra Borjas was a 33-year-old sergeant from San Diego, California, serving with Company A, 416th Civil Affairs Battalion, a U.S. Army Reserve unit based in his hometown. The 416th specialized in building relationships with local populations, and Borjas had reportedly deployed on missions to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On October 16, 2008, Sergeant Borjas was killed at Forward Operating Base Boris in Paktika Province, southeastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Specific details of the engagement were not widely released in public announcements.

Borjas died during a period of intensified conflict in Afghanistan. By 2008, the Taliban had regrouped and insurgent tactics, including the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct attacks on military outposts, were increasing. U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major counterinsurgency campaign across the country's eastern and southern regions.

Sergeant Borjas was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.

He is memorialized on the 416th Civil Affairs Battalion's roll of honor and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty memorials. His name appears on Panel 41E, Line 28 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Ontario, California.
