Their Story
Peter Christopher Bohler was a 29-year-old sergeant from Willow Spring, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army as a member of Company B, 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
On December 18, 2013, Bohler was killed when a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed in the Now Bahar district of Afghanistan's Ghazni province. The U.S. Department of Defense stated the crash was the result of a hostile incident. According to reports, the helicopter was on a mission when it was struck by enemy fire.
Bohler's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2013, the mission was focused on training Afghan forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations as international troops prepared to withdraw.
