Their Story

Sergeant First Class Bradley Scott Bohle was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A native of Glen Burnie, Maryland, he was 29 years old at the time of his death.

On September 16, 2009, Bohle was killed by enemy small arms fire during a combat operation in Ghur Ghuri, a village in the mountainous Daykundi Province of central Afghanistan. He was reportedly part of a mission to disrupt insurgent networks in the region.

Bohle's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation focused on combating Taliban and al-Qaeda forces. In 2009, U.S. troop levels were increasing as part of a strategy to secure population centers.

According to the Department of Defense, Bohle was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Bohle is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated Special Forces engineer sergeant. His name is inscribed on Panel 19W, Line 93 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on memorials dedicated to fallen soldiers from Maryland and the 7th Special Forces Group.
