Sgt. Thomas Andrew Bohall, 25, of Wichita, Kansas, was a U.S. Army Pathfinder with the 101st Aviation Regiment. He was killed in a hostile incident on May 26, 2011, in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Thomas Andrew Bohall was a 25-year-old sergeant from Wichita, Kansas. He served as a Pathfinder, an elite soldier specializing in securing helicopter landing zones, with Company F, 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On May 26, 2011, Bohall was part of a U.S. military advisory team meeting with Afghan police in the district center of Spin Boldak, Kandahar province, near the Pakistani border. A man wearing an Afghan police uniform opened fire on the group. The attack killed Bohall and a U.S. Navy petty officer, and wounded a U.S. civilian contractor. The assailant was reportedly killed by return fire.

Bohall's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was focused on counter-insurgency and training Afghan security forces, with intense fighting in southern provinces like Kandahar.

The Pentagon officially announced Bohall's death two days after the incident. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors in his home state of Kansas. His unit and family received condolences from military officials.

Sgt. Bohall was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is remembered by his unit as a dedicated Pathfinder and by his family as a beloved son and brother. His name is inscribed on the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell.
