Private First Class Cody Allen Board, 19, of McKinney, Texas, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on October 4, 2010.

Their Story

Cody Allen Board was born and raised in McKinney, Texas, a city north of Dallas. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Alpha Company, 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, operating as part of Task Force Dragoon.

On October 4, 2010, PFC Board was on a mounted patrol in Kandahar province, a major focus of coalition operations at the time. His Stryker vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. The blast killed him and another soldier, Specialist Andrew J. Castro, 20, of Westlake Village, California.

Board's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, international forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations concentrated in the country's southern provinces, including Kandahar.

The Department of Defense announced the casualties on October 6, 2010. Board was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His body was returned to Texas for burial.

He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his regiment. His name is inscribed on Panel 2R, Line 127 of the Texas Capitol's Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans Memorial.
