U.S. Army Sergeant Jesse Allen Blamires, 25, of West Jordan, Utah, was killed in the Upper Sangin Valley, Afghanistan, on May 30, 2007, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Jesse Allen Blamires was a 25-year-old sergeant from West Jordan, Utah, serving with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 82nd Aviation Brigade is a combat aviation unit providing air support for ground operations.
On May 30, 2007, Sergeant Blamires was killed by hostile action in the Upper Sangin Valley of Afghanistan's Helmand Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he was one of two soldiers from the 82nd Aviation Brigade who died that day in the same region. The specific incident, such as an ambush or improvised explosive device attack, was not detailed in the initial release.
In mid-2007, the Sangin Valley was a focal point of intense fighting between NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops and Taliban insurgents. The area was a known insurgent stronghold and a major opium-producing region. U.S. and British forces conducted frequent counter-insurgency operations there to disrupt Taliban control.
Sergeant Blamires's death was reported by several news outlets, including The Salt Lake Tribune, which noted his Utah roots. He was survived by his wife and other family members. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Sergeant Blamires is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Utah State Capitol and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 82nd Aviation Brigade, continued its deployment in Afghanistan following his death.
