Their Story
Joseph Robert Blake was a 34-year-old Private from Portland, Oregon. He served as an active-duty soldier with Company A, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York.
On August 17, 2006, Blake was killed in Asadabad, the capital of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting combat operations when it came under enemy small-arms fire. He was one of two soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division killed in separate incidents in eastern Afghanistan that day.
Blake's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom. By 2006, insurgent activity, particularly in Afghanistan's eastern provinces, had escalated significantly. U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in frequent counterinsurgency operations in remote, mountainous regions like Kunar.
The Department of Defense announced Blake's death on August 19, 2006. He was survived by his family in Portland, Oregon. His name is inscribed on the Oregon Memorial and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Defense Department.
No specific individual memorials or posthumous awards for Blake are widely documented in public sources. He is remembered among the more than 2,400 U.S. service members who died during the Afghanistan War.
