Their Story
John David Blair was a 38-year-old First Sergeant from Calhoun, Georgia. He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, part of the Georgia Army National Guard based in Lawrenceville.
On June 20, 2009, Blair was killed in Mado Zayi, a village in Afghanistan's Paktika province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol when it came under small-arms fire from enemy forces.
Blair's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in extensive counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern provinces.
The Department of Defense announced his death on June 22, 2009. He was survived by his wife and children. His body was returned to Georgia, where he was buried with full military honors.
Blair was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Georgia National Guard's Fallen Heroes Memorial in Marietta.
