Their Story
John Christian Bishop was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). The unit was based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Bishop was from Columbus, Indiana.
On September 8, 2010, Corporal Bishop was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. He was reportedly on a foot patrol when his unit came under enemy fire.
Bishop's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a major focus on counterinsurgency operations in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. The 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines was heavily engaged in clearing Taliban strongholds and securing population centers.
