Their Story

Christopher James Birdwell was a 25-year-old Staff Sergeant from Windsor, Colorado. He served with Company A, 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado.

On August 27, 2012, Birdwell died in Kalagush, a district in Afghanistan's eastern Nuristan province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Specific details of the engagement were not publicly released by the military.

Birdwell's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation involved counter-insurgency and stability missions against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces.

Birdwell was one of two Fort Carson soldiers killed in Afghanistan on the same day. The other was 22-year-old Specialist Mabry J. Anders. The 4th Brigade Combat Team had deployed to Afghanistan in March 2012 for a nine-month mission.

He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. Birdwell is memorialized on the 4th Infantry Division memorial at Fort Carson and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in his hometown of Windsor.
