U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Patrick Belkofer, 44, of Perrysburg, Ohio, was killed on May 18, 2010, in a suicide vehicle bomb attack on a NATO convoy in Darulaman, Kabul, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Thomas Patrick Belkofer was a 44-year-old U.S. Army officer from Perrysburg, Ohio. He served with the Intelligence and Sustainment Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Infantry Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. His military career included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On May 18, 2010, Belkofer was killed in the Darulaman area of Kabul. A suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) detonated near a NATO convoy. The attack, which occurred in the morning, killed 18 people, including five U.S. service members, a Canadian colonel, and 12 Afghan civilians. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Belkofer died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power, evolving into a protracted counterinsurgency and nation-building effort.
In the aftermath, Belkofer's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held at Arlington National Cemetery. The attack was reported by international news agencies, highlighting the persistent threat of suicide bombings in the Afghan capital.
Belkofer was remembered by his unit as a dedicated officer. He was survived by his wife and two children. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio.
