Their Story
Genaro Bedoy was a 20-year-old soldier from Amarillo, Texas. He served with Company C, 52nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
On September 16, 2012, Specialist Bedoy died in Spin Murani, a village in the Maiwand district of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident, reportedly involving an improvised explosive device (IED) that struck his unit.
Bedoy's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The operation focused on counterinsurgency and stability operations, with Kandahar province remaining a significant area of conflict in 2012.
Following his death, the Department of Defense formally announced the loss. Local media in Amarillo reported on his passing, noting he was a graduate of Caprock High School.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His name is inscribed on Panel 28W, Line 78 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
