Their Story
Clayton Ross Beauchamp was a Petty Officer Second Class in the United States Navy. He served with the 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, and had deployed to multiple regions, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On August 7, 2012, Beauchamp was killed by enemy small-arms fire in Shaban, located in Afghanistan's Helmand province. He was part of a Marine-led ground operation in the volatile district at the time of his death.
Beauchamp died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with intense counterinsurgency operations continuing in southern provinces like Helmand.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the loss. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His body was returned to his family in Texas for burial.
Beauchamp is remembered on memorial walls and by veterans' organizations. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the United States Navy and is included in the online registry of the 'Faces of the Fallen' project.
