Their Story
Jordan Logan Bear was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to the Department of Defense, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Bear died on March 1, 2012, in the Zharay district of Afghanistan's Kandahar province. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was reportedly on patrol when his unit was struck by an improvised explosive device.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The Zharay district was a known Taliban stronghold and a focal point for coalition counterinsurgency operations in 2012.
The Pentagon announced Bear's death on March 2, 2012. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States.
Bear is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado Freedom Memorial in Aurora. His name is also inscribed on Panel 23W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Omaha, Nebraska.
