Their Story

Thomas Allen Baysore Jr. was from Milton, Pennsylvania. He joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The unit, known as "Red Currahee," had a long combat history. Baysore had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On September 26, 2013, Baysore, a staff sergeant, was at Combat Outpost Wilderness in the Sar Hawza District of Paktika province, eastern Afghanistan. The outpost was attacked by Taliban insurgents employing small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. Baysore was killed during this direct assault on the coalition position. The attack was part of a series of coordinated Taliban operations that day.

Baysore's death occurred during the final phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led combat mission in Afghanistan. By late 2013, the U.S. had drawn down surge forces and was transitioning security responsibility to Afghan forces. The Taliban remained active, conducting attacks against both Afghan and international troops, particularly in eastern provinces like Paktika.

Following his death, Baysore was posthumously promoted to staff sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held at Fort Campbell, and he was buried in his home state of Pennsylvania. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on September 27, 2013.

Staff Sgt. Baysore's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Milton Area Veterans Memorial Park in Pennsylvania. He is also listed on the 101st Airborne Division's memorial at Fort Campbell, honoring soldiers of the division who died in Afghanistan.
