Baune, Taylor John
Cpl. Taylor John Baune, 21, of Andover, Minnesota, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on June 13, 2012.
Their Story
Taylor John Baune was a 21-year-old Marine corporal from Andover, Minnesota. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Twentynine Palms, California.
On June 13, 2012, Baune was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died while conducting combat operations. The Marine Corps listed the cause as hostile.
Baune's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a significant concentration of U.S. forces, particularly Marines, operating in Helmand province.
Following his death, Baune's body was returned to Minnesota. A funeral service was held at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in his hometown of Andover. He was buried with military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Baune was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in Minnesota and by his battalion. His name is inscribed on Panel 26W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Minnesota State Capitol.
