Ryan Patrick Baumann was a 24-year-old sergeant from Great Mills, Maryland. He served on active duty with Battery G, 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit had deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On August 1, 2008, Sergeant Baumann was killed in Tani, a village in Afghanistan's eastern Khowst Province. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. According to contemporaneous reporting, the incident occurred during a firefight with insurgent forces.

Baumann's death came during a period of intensified combat operations in Afghanistan. 2008 saw a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and a sharp rise in violence, particularly in eastern provinces like Khowst along the border with Pakistan. The conflict, which began in October 2001, was then in its seventh year.
