U.S. Army Major Larry John Bauguess Jr., 36, of Moravian Falls, North Carolina, was killed in a hostile incident on May 14, 2007, in Teri Mengel, Pakistan.

Their Story

Major Larry John Bauguess Jr. was a 36-year-old officer from Moravian Falls, North Carolina, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, based at Fort Bragg. He had served on deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa as part of his military career.

On May 14, 2007, Bauguess was part of a U.S. military delegation meeting with Pakistani officials in Teri Mengel, a village in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). According to U.S. military and news reports, a Pakistani paramilitary soldier opened fire on the meeting. Bauguess was shot and killed. A second American soldier was wounded, and a Pakistani soldier was also reportedly killed in the incident.

Bauguess's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001. By 2007, the conflict's focus had broadened beyond Afghanistan, with counterterrorism and security cooperation efforts extending into neighboring Pakistan. The region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border was a focal point of insurgent activity and military engagement.

The Pentagon confirmed Bauguess's death the following day. His body was returned to the United States, and he was posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star Medal. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.

Major Bauguess is memorialized at Arlington National Cemetery. His death was cited in congressional testimony and reports examining the complexities of U.S. military and diplomatic relations in Pakistan during the conflict.
