Private First Class Brian Russell Bates Jr. was a 20-year-old soldier from Gretna, Louisiana. He served with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, part of the 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in July 2009 as part of Task Force Stryker.
On October 27, 2009, Bates was killed in action in Zabul province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, the incident occurred approximately one kilometer north of the village of Loy Kariz. The official cause was listed as hostile fire, though specific details of the engagement were not widely released in public reporting.
Bates died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
