Jon-luke Bateman was a 22-year-old Marine corporal from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, part of Regimental Combat Team 6, which was deployed from Camp Pendleton, California. His unit had previously conducted operations in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before deploying to Afghanistan.
On January 15, 2012, Corporal Bateman was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan.
