First Sergeant Robert Nicholas Barton II was a 35-year-old soldier from Roxie, Mississippi. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Barton died on June 7, 2010, in Dangam Ashmar, a village in the volatile Konar province of eastern Afghanistan. He was killed by enemy small arms fire during a dismounted patrol, according to a military release archived by the Army Times. The area was known for insurgent activity.
Barton's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2010, U.S. forces were engaged in a major troop surge, conducting counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern provinces along the border with Pakistan.
