Sergeant Michael Christopher Barry was a 29-year-old soldier from Overland Park, Kansas. He served with the Headquarters and Service Company, 205th Medical Battalion, a unit of the Missouri Army National Guard based in Kansas City.
Barry died on February 1, 2003, in Doha, Qatar. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed in a vehicle accident while on duty. He was one of the first American service members to die in Qatar during the post-9/11 military operations.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign launched in October 2001 in response to the September 11 attacks. The operation initially focused on Afghanistan but expanded to include a global network of support bases, like the one in Qatar, for logistics, command, and medical operations.
The Army announced his death in a press release on February 3, 2003. He was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. His unit, the 205th Medical Battalion, had been mobilized for federal service in 2002.
