Captain Brandon Aaron Barrett, 27, of Marion, Indiana, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on May 5, 2010.
Their Story
Brandon Aaron Barrett was a 27-year-old captain in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was a native of Marion, Indiana.
On May 5, 2010, Captain Barrett was killed by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in the southern Afghan province of Helmand. The blast occurred in the Marjah district, a region where U.S. and allied forces had launched a major offensive, Operation Moshtarak, earlier that year to clear Taliban strongholds.
Barrett's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2010, the conflict's focus had shifted to a counterinsurgency strategy, with intense fighting concentrated in southern provinces like Helmand and Kandahar.
According to a Department of Defense news release, Barrett was one of two Marines killed in the IED strike. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in Marion National Cemetery in Indiana. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart.
Captain Barrett is remembered on the 'Faces of the Fallen' memorial pages of The Washington Post and other military remembrance sites. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
