Barbozaflores, Pedro Antonio
Lance Corporal Pedro Antonio Barbozaflores, a 27-year-old U.S. Marine from Glendale, California, was killed in hostile action in Khan Neshin, Afghanistan, on July 11, 2009.
Their Story
Pedro Antonio Barbozaflores was a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, serving with the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, part of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Afghanistan, out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was from Glendale, California.
On July 11, 2009, Barbozaflores was killed by hostile fire in the Khan Neshin district of Afghanistan's Helmand province. He was part of a major Marine offensive, Operation Khanjar (Strike of the Sword), which had launched days earlier to clear Taliban strongholds in southern Helmand. The operation involved thousands of Marines moving into previously uncontested areas.
Barbozaflores died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission evolved from counter-terrorism to a protracted counterinsurgency and nation-building effort, with a significant troop surge underway in 2009.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense. He was one of at least seven U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during that week of intense fighting as Operation Khanjar continued.
Barbozaflores is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. His name appears on the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion's roll of honor.
