Lieutenant Colonel Robert Francis Baldwin was a 39-year-old officer from Muscatine, Illinois. He served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Baldwin died on September 21, 2010, in Qalat, Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was killed by small arms fire while on a dismounted patrol with Afghan National Army forces.
Baldwin's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. At the time, a surge of U.S. forces was underway, with a focus on counterinsurgency operations in provinces like Zabul.
