Their Story
Cody Glen Baker was a 19-year-old soldier from Holton, Kansas. He served as a Private First Class with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
Baker died on August 3, 2011, in the Mayde Shardistrict of Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of a hostile incident. No further operational details of the event were publicly released.
Baker's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.
Baker's body was returned to Kansas. He was buried at the Holton Cemetery. The Holton Recorder reported that hundreds of community members lined the streets for his funeral procession.
Baker was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. In Holton, his name is inscribed on a local veterans memorial.
