Their Story
David John Badie was a 23-year-old soldier from Rockford, Illinois. He served as a Specialist with Company A, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas. According to military records, his service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment in Afghanistan.
On August 1, 2008, Badie was killed in Asadabad, the capital of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device during a mounted patrol. He was the only soldier killed in the blast.
Badie's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2008, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in the use of IEDs by insurgent forces, particularly in eastern provinces like Kunar along the border with Pakistan.
Following his death, Badie's body was returned to Illinois. A funeral service was held in Rockford, and he was buried with military honors. The Rockford Register Star reported that he was remembered by family as a dedicated soldier who loved his country.
David Badie is memorialized on the 1st Cavalry Division monument at Fort Hood and on online veterans' memorials. His name is included on the Illinois Fallen Heroes memorial in Springfield.
