Their Story
Brian John Backus was a 21-year-old soldier from Saginaw Township, Michigan. He served as a Private First Class with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Drum, New York. His service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
On June 18, 2011, Backus was killed by enemy fire at Kandahar Air Field, a major coalition base in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense confirmed his death was the result of hostile action, though specific details of the engagement were not widely reported in public releases.
Backus died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on the Taliban heartland in Kandahar province, where Kandahar Air Field served as a primary logistical and operational hub.
Following his death, his body was returned to Michigan. A funeral service was held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations.
