U.S. Army Sergeant James Anthony Ayube II, 25, of Salem, Massachusetts, died on December 8, 2010, in Chehel Gazi, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
James Anthony Ayube II was born on June 29, 1985, and grew up in Salem, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2006 and served as a combat medic. At the time of his death, he was assigned to Company B, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany.
On December 8, 2010, Sergeant Ayube was killed by hostile fire in Chehel Gazi, a village in the Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died while conducting a dismounted patrol. The area was a known insurgent stronghold.
Ayube's death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major offensive in Kandahar, a Taliban heartland, as part of a broader troop surge aimed at stabilizing the region.
Sergeant Ayube's body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody, Massachusetts. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal for his actions.
He is remembered by family and fellow soldiers as a dedicated medic. In 2012, a memorial playground was dedicated in his honor at the Forest River Park in Salem.
