Their Story
Bradley Wayne Atwell was a 27-year-old sergeant from Kokomo, Indiana, serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13 (MALS-13), Marine Aircraft Group 13, part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing forward deployed from Yuma, Arizona, to Afghanistan.
Atwell died on September 15, 2012, at Camp Bastion, a major NATO air base in Helmand Province. According to U.S. military reports, the base was infiltrated by a group of insurgents wearing U.S. Army uniforms. The attackers breached the perimeter and engaged in a firefight, targeting aircraft and personnel. Atwell and one other U.S. Marine were killed in the assault; several coalition aircraft were destroyed or damaged.
The attack occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a significant drawdown of U.S. surge forces underway. The assault on Camp Bastion was one of the most damaging single attacks on a coalition air base during the war.
In the aftermath, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The U.S. Marine Corps confirmed Atwell's death and posthumously promoted him to the rank of sergeant. His body was returned to the United States, and a memorial service was held in Indiana.
Atwell was remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated Marine. His name is inscribed on the Indiana Fallen Heroes Memorial and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense.
