Their Story

Joshua Ryan Ashley was a 23-year-old sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion (2nd LEB), I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Ashley was from Rancho Cucamonga, California.

On July 19, 2012, Sgt. Ashley was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died while conducting combat operations. The specific incident was not detailed in initial releases, but his death was recorded as a result of hostile action.

Ashley's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, Helmand province remained a major center of insurgent activity and was the scene of intense fighting for U.S. and allied forces.
