Arsenault, Brian K
U.S. Army Specialist Brian K. Arsenault, 28, of Northborough, Massachusetts, was killed in a hostile incident on September 4, 2014, at Forward Operating Base Ghazni Aid Station in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Specialist Brian K. Arsenault was a 28-year-old soldier from Northborough, Massachusetts. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On September 4, 2014, Arsenault was killed by enemy small-arms fire at Forward Operating Base Ghazni Aid Station in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. The incident occurred during a complex attack on the base by insurgent forces. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the assault, which also reportedly involved a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device.
Arsenault's death came during the final phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2014, U.S. forces were in a period of transition, drawing down combat troops and shifting to a train-and-advise mission. Insurgent attacks on coalition outposts remained a persistent threat.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced his loss. His body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Northborough, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow soldiers.
Arsenault was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His name is inscribed on the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial in Boston's Seaport District. He is also listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Massachusetts State House.
