Their Story
Ofren Arrechaga was a senior non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, serving with the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The battalion, known as "No Slack," deployed to eastern Afghanistan in 2010 as part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team.
On March 29, 2011, Arrechaga was killed during combat operations in the Sarkani district of Afghanistan's volatile Konar province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire. He was 28 years old.
Arrechaga's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces heavily engaged in counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the rugged eastern provinces bordering Pakistan.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from staff sergeant to sergeant first class. Arrechaga was survived by his wife, Ivilisse, and their two young children.
Sgt. 1st Class Arrechaga was a decorated soldier. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Army Commendation Medal, among others. He is memorialized on the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell and on online veterans' remembrance sites.
