Their Story

Marc A. Arizmendez was a 30-year-old Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, based in Hohenfels, Germany, and was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On July 6, 2010, Arizmendez died in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. He was reportedly killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a mounted patrol.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a significant focus on counterinsurgency operations in provinces like Zabul, where Taliban forces remained active.

The Department of Defense announced his death on July 8, 2010. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held for him in Germany, and his name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Hohenfels Training Area.

Staff Sergeant Arizmendez was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He is remembered by his unit as a dedicated soldier and leader.
