Lance Cpl. Carlos Alberto Aragon, 19, of Orem, Utah, was a U.S. Marine Corps reservist. He was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on March 1, 2010.
Their Story
Carlos Alberto Aragon was a 19-year-old from Orem, Utah. He served as a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps Reserve, assigned to the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, based in Riverton, Utah.
According to the Department of Defense, Aragon died on March 1, 2010, in Helmand province, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. He was reportedly on a foot patrol when he was struck by an improvised explosive device.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2010, U.S. forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with intense fighting concentrated in Taliban strongholds like Helmand province.
Following his death, Aragon's body was returned to Utah. A funeral service was held at the Timpanogos Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in American Fork, and he was buried in the Orem City Cemetery.
Aragon was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorial walls in Utah and is listed on the iCasualties.org database documenting coalition fatalities in Afghanistan.
