Their Story
Daniel McKinnon Angus was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was from Thonotosassa, Florida, and was 28 years old at the time of his death. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Angus died on January 24, 2010, in Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by hostile fire while supporting combat operations. The Marine Corps stated he was conducting a dismounted patrol in the Now Zad district, a region of intense fighting at the time.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with Helmand province being a primary focus of operations against Taliban insurgents. The Now Zad district was a known insurgent stronghold.
